Silica Testing from Axiom Medical

2.3 million U.S. workers are currently exposed to crystalline silica, with high risk industries in the construction, and maritime fields. High levels of exposure can be found in:

  • Removing paint
  • Abrasive blasting
  • Cement/brick manufacturing
  • Repair/replacement brick furnace lining
  • Drilling, molding, sawing
  • Demolition
  • Jack hammering
  • Pottery production

Although crystalline silica dust may seem harmless, (the particles are about 100 times smaller than ordinary sand you might find on beaches and playgrounds), it is not.

The dust particles can penetrate to the deepest part of the human lung when inhaled. Chronic exposure and inhalation of such respirable crystalline silica (RCS) dust can lead to severe lung disease, such as silicosis and increased risk of developing tuberculosis. Worker’s exposed to silica may not experience symptoms until 15-20 years later – but a chest x-ray can determine if there is lung damage.

If your employees are not tested regularly and they continue to be exposed due to drilling, sawing, and other construction tasks, silica exposure can lead to irreversible disease.

Without assessing the severity of damage, the disease will progress causing: extreme shortness of breath, chronic fatigue, chest pain or respiratory failure.

To ensure employers stay compliant and employees stay healthy, Axiom provides comprehensive silica testing program that includes: OSHA mandated 7-part testing for employees every 3 years, 4-part testing every year, notification of re-testing, and management of all medical records, in addition to:

  • Silica questionnaire
  • Physical exam
  • Chest X-ray, with “B” reader TB skin test
  • Respirator Questionnaire
  • Respiratory Fit Test
  • Pulmonary Function Test
