Are you looking for a way to find employees at risk for possible Beryllium exposure? Axiom Medical can help. Several workers in the construction, energy, and defense industries are often at risk for potential Beryllium exposure, which causes Chronic Beryllium Disease or CBD, a chronic lung disease.

After OSHA’s newest Beryllium Exam mandate on May 11, 2018, employees working in construction need to have an exam performed every two years.  Axiom Medical provides employee Beryllium Testing options with a questionnaire, physical exam, and the BeLPT or Beryllium Lymphocyte Proliferation Test to help employers stay compliant with OSHA.

Axiom Medical offers a variety of employee testing and exams.

What is Beryllium Exam or Beryllium Lymphocyte Proliferation Test?

A beryllium lymphocyte proliferation test (BeLPT) is conducted to detect possible beryllium exposure of an individual. This is a blood test that measures beryllium sensitization in a person. Based on the exam results, it will be apparent if some of the workers have an “allergic” reaction to beryllium. The test is specific, which means those only with an allergy will have a positive lymphocyte proliferation test result.

Who Should Undergo BeLPT?

As per OSHA’s recommendations, employees working in the construction industry should take the BeLPT once every two years. According to the NJH or National Jewish Health®, individuals with a history of beryllium exposure of any form should undergo this test. Beryllium exposure may involve dust or fumes emitted from pure beryllium metal or copper-, aluminum-, nickel-, and magnesium-beryllium alloys, ceramics, and composite materials containing parts or traces of this metal. Since CBD can be mistaken for other respiratory problems like asthma, sarcoidosis, pulmonary fibrosis, chronic bronchitis, COPD, or other lung ailments, the blood BeLPT helps diagnose correctly.

OSHA recommends a BeLPT test for individuals:

  • Who currently work directly at construction sites or building with beryllium dust or fumes
  • Who have performed janitorial duties and building maintenance at the construction sites)
  • Who are short-term employees or summer students at a building or site with beryllium exposure (beryllium sensitization and CBD can develop with just a few months of exposure)
  • Diagnosed with lung disease or scarring lung diseases or with a history of beryllium exposure

How Can Axiom Medical’s Beryllium Test and Program Help?

Our total employee health approach includes medical surveillance to optimize worker health using health data and preventive measures. Such a program aims to detect and eliminate the underlying causes of workplace risks such as beryllium exposure.

Our employee health programs can contribute to workplace health and safety by identifying potential problem areas and addressing those issues with appropriate measures. Our team also verifies the employer’s existing workplace risk management and prevention programs’ effectiveness before introducing and implementing a new plan.

Our Beryllium Exam includes an initial questionnaire and medical examinations required to diagnose the disease and sensitivity. Our program includes:

− Initial questionnaire followed by a detailed analysis of medical and work history with an emphasis on past and present airborne exposure

− Physical examination respiratory system check

− Beryllium lymphocyte proliferation test to determine the exposure level

− Any other test deemed appropriate by the physician to diagnose CBD correctly

They Said It!

I believe with confidence that we are reaching all of our expected goals by bringing Axiom on as an outsourced case management solution.

Axiom has helped us closely monitor the injured employee’s progress through the medical treatment process. Early treatment has kept our employees at work when in the past they would have likely taken time off or been placed off by a physician.

I recommend Axiom because their Nurse Case Management Team is their biggest asset. They are accessible, give great reports and are responsive to our needs.
